Manchester United's road to the Europa League final: How Jose Mourinho's side reached Stockholm showpiece

Manchester United are into the Europa League final after seeing off Celta Vigo 2-1 on aggregate.
United will now face Ajax in Stockholm, at the Friends Arena, following the Dutch club's victory over Lyon.
Jose Mourinho’s side have played 14 games to reach the competition's finale and know that victory in Sweden will guarantee their involvement in next season’s Champions League.
European football's secondary competition is the only major trophy that the Red Devils are yet to lift in their history, and victory in Sweden will put them alongside Bayern Munich, Ajax, Juventus and Chelsea as the only clubs to win all of UEFA's majors.
Here is the story of how United claimed their spot in the final...
They finished second in the table, as Turkish side Fenerbahce stole top spot by one point.
Mourinho’s men picked up four wins, including a double over Ukranian side Zorya.
They also demolished both Fenerbahce and Feyenoord at Old Trafford, by three and four goal margins respectively.
But United lost two of their six games, narrowly defeated in Istanbul and Rotterdam. That loss in Turkey proved pivotal.
United came up against French side Saint-Etienne in the last 32.
The Reds cruised into a 3-0 first leg lead courtesy of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hat-trick.
It was the Swedish striker’s first triple for United, and put him on 23 goals for the season.
They had a comfortable night in the return leg in France. An early Henrik Mkhitaryan goal put his side four goals ahead on aggregat

An Eric Bailly red card did not stop United keeping a fourth successive clean sheet in the competition and earning a safe passage into the last eight

Round of 16

United made the long trip to Russia as they faced FC Rostov.
Mourinho was unhappy with the state of Rostov’s pitch, but his team came away with a positive result

Mkhitaryan was on the scoresheet as the Red Devils took a half time lead in the first leg.

The home side struck back to keep the tie in the balance.
United travelled made a near 4,000-mile round trip for the game and 238 fans travelled to support their side.
The Reds were far from convincing in the second leg at Old Trafford, but got the job done.
Juan Mata netted the only goal of the game to send United through, 2-1 on aggregate

Quarter Finals

United faced Belgian side Anderlecht in the last eight.
Mkhitaryan scored yet again and looked to have given Mourinho’s men an away lead. But like in Russia, United were pegged back by an 86th minute equaliser.
The second leg was another nervy affair and started off with Mkhitaryan’s fourth goal in four Europa League games.
But when Anderlecht grabbed an away goal, the tie went to extra time.
Marcus Rashford was the hero as his 107th minute goal proved to be the winner.

Semi Finals

The Red Devils took on Spanish team Celta Vigo in the last four.
At the Balaidos, England prodigy Rashford proved to be the difference.
The 19 year-old's stunning second half free-kick gave United a one goal advantage to take back to Old Trafford and any nerves were soon settled by Marouane Fellaini's header early in the second leg.
And despite Facundo Roncaglia's late header, United will face the Amsterdammers in the final.
